Providing uncertainty estimates of the Sentinel-2 top-of-atmosphere measurements for radiometric validation activities

Abstract

This paper presents a method to provide uncertainty estimates associated with Sentinel-2 top-of-atmosphere (TOA) reflectance measurements to support radiometric validation activities. The uncertainty model accounts for the instrument calibration, stray light, spectral response, and other relevant sources of uncertainty. The framework aims to improve the confidence in radiometric validation by offering traceable and comprehensive uncertainty metrics. Results show the applicability of the approach to different surface types and observation geometries.
